The Kill-A-Watt: This, and other devices like it are a great way to find out exactly how much electricity your appliances actually use. By measuring power usage at the plug, you will have an exact reading of both the electricity used while the item is active, as well as the wasted standby power that is being drawn. You can learn which appliances you should unplug when they are not in use, thus lowering your electricity consumption and bill.
Battery Charger: For anyone who uses a lot of batteries, the small amount of electricity it takes to charge the batteries will easily outweigh the cost of new batteries! (Just remember to unplug it while not in use!)
Filter Water Bottles: These allow you to fill up on water from the water fountain or faucet and have pure, clean drinking water all day long. No more buying bottled water everywhere you go!
Programmable Thermostats: Programmable thermostats work wonders, turning the heat or air down (saving energy and money) while you're away at work or overnight while you're sleeping. They allow you both ease and comfort of energy conservation by heating or cooling your home for when you'll be present and awake. No more forgetting to turn the thermostat down; it's on autopilot!

Having back-up storage isn't something that only companies need, most people accumulate a large quantity of data that they want to preserve, be it pictures, documents, videos, emails, or music. The best way to ensure that your saved data stays with you over the years is to have it backed up. When it comes to preserving your data, you don't have to start fancy, but you can get as protective (or overprotective) as you like.
Start simple: Make copies of your data on CDs or flash drives for instant back-up. Now, if you're truly committed to keeping your files safe, you'll want to have a copy that is not in your house – if your house burns down, the stack of CD's sitting in your desk drawer are as gone as your computer- and this goes for the following storage category as well.
The next step would be to invest in an external hard-drive where you can store your data. These can be purchased at most electronics stores or online and they are fairly affordable. If you have a home network, creating space on your server is another way to go about this.
Your other option is online storage, which has become much more popular in recent years. This is off-site online storage in which your information is backed-up in a company's own data-storage system. There are a number of companies offering this, so shop around to find the one that best fits your needs. |

GPS Navigation Systems: These days, most people don't even look up directions before they leave, they just type in the address and follow their GPS unit's instructions. Sure, it's an extremely handy device, but let's just remember, maps work even when there is no source of power!

iPod Connections: Radio is outdated with all those commercials; even satellite radio has been forced to take a backseat to people's personal music collections.
Bluetooth: Bluetooth synch compatible devices which integrates functionality, and in most modern vehicles that means that your phone works through your car, making driving and talking on the phone a lot safer, thanks especially to voice-command dialing. |

The Future of Computers & Communication
|
|
Well, the phone wristbands didn't really fly with an American audience (yes, they already made and tested those), so what will the future of technology look like? Well, there are a myriad of possibilities and it all depends on who gets funded, what consumer testing reports back to companies, and many other factors. From where we're sitting now it appears that nanotechnology may play a part in future computers and communication will become network based.
Already, friends can "bump" their phones to exchange contact information, and if social networking continues to spread "bumping” will soon do much more. As for the nano, well, it's showing up everywhere already, and given the drive for ever-smaller devices, it's only a matter of time before we see it emerge in the computers and communications scene. |

What is the shelf life of VHS tape? No one knows for sure, but most video experts say 8 to 12 years. I have some tapes that are over 25 years old that still play. I have also tried to play some tapes much younger in age that had noticeable playback problems.
Improper storage and handling of tape will greatly affect their life expectancy. Contact me if I can help preserve your video memories.
